251217 "New Nutrition Label for 2018... Well..Not so Fast"

Can you believe that it has been 20 years since the inception of the Nutrition Facts Lebel on the back of your processed food products!! Wow how time flies. For 20 years, companies have disclosed almost all of the ingredients and nutritional values in their products as a way to inform us of what we stuff in our faces. In 2017 I wrote about the FDA's revamping of a new Nutritional label that would reflect more of the added sugars in products as well as serving size adjustments that allow for more of an 'AMERICAN' size instead of those wimpy 'euro' sizes that actually are meant to keep you form overeating. But... alas... The Trump administration has once again turned right when it is clear that it is going to lead us to more sickness and greater profits for food product companies.

Just a little back ground on the current label and why an addition is necessary. The label grew out of the increased epidemic of obesity that emerged in the the late 80's and 90's. Because food product companies were getting very ingenious about the types of chemical and fortification methods they used to keep foods tasting good and on the shelves for a long time; some brilliant health advocates decided that it should be brought to our attention, what we were actually consuming.

Did we pay attention? Well, not so much. While obesity is still skyrocketing in this country we can all agree that the nutrition labels are not going to solve the problem but a few actually read the stuff. The problem is not so much with the label though. The problem is with the user. You and I are both smart enough, I think, to know that fresh (perishable) food is good for you and processed food is bad. To the majority of consumers, food in packages is the ONLY kind of food they consume. The food product labels lays out Percent daily Values for all kinds of metrics on the label; but the question becomes, do people really understand how to quantify those numbers and percentages. Do they care?

So now we have the refreshed version of the label coming.... Kind of. While many of the Percentages and Nutritional data are being put in even BOLDER font, many aspects are still lacking and that transparency is keeping folks from putting the packages back and grabbing the veggies. One glaring and necessary change to the current label is the "ADDED SUGAR" line down on the bottom of the new label.

The FDA believes, (and you all need to frickin pay attention to this), that ADDING SUGAR TO FOOD PRODUCTS IS A HEALTHY WAY TO ADD CALORIES TO YOUR DIET. Can you believe this? 2018 is upon us, we are going to send Teslas to Mars, and the FDA still believes that adding sugar to food is good for us!!  But at least they are going to put it in small type font on the label.....

10 Million dollars per year in food product sales is the threshold for label requirements. The Trump administration has delayed the roll out of the new label until 2020 now to allow for more time to change. Food Product companies see the new label as a limiter to profits and have rallied the republican cabinet to delay and allow for less transparency. Being transparent about additives and the ingredients in food products scares the shit out of these companies.

The Nutritional guidelines will be getting another re-assesment in 2020, which, I believe is what the food lobby is delaying for . Profits to shareholders will continue to be maintained at the cost of a Nations Health. We do not have access to the inner workings of the lobby in government but this Nutritional label is one way we can see the gamesmanship and inadequacy of governmental agencies.

I implore you to educate others about this lack of change and to encourage change within your own household by shopping local and shopping fresh. Your wallet will thank you and you can feel good about not consuming chemicals and additives secretly put in your food. With that, I send you into 2018 with the best wishes for optimal health. You control your destiny to a large extent, I will continue to keep you abreast of all the information regarding your health.

With love,
Eric
